It’s said that intellect is what separates us from the animals, in and of itself, perhaps. Broadly painted, it could also be said that intellect is what separates us from trees, computers, or a river. Intellect requires reason, comprehension, and understanding.
It suggests that to possess intellect is to be superior to that which does not. The shark, the lion, and the sun do not possess intellect and are as old or older than humanity. Yet, they know nothing of deceit, treachery, or self-destruction, and they do not commit suicide, gossip, or worship that which they cannot see. These are human traits exclusively.
It is not intellect that separates us from them. It is intellect that separates them from us.
